The Catania Fish Market, also known locally as the Storico Mercato del Pesce di Catania, is one of the best things to do in Catania.
The market is wild and not for the faint-hearted, so be warned.
Our emotions about the place were divided.
Catania Fish Market
It’s brutal and fascinating, in equal measure.
Brutal because giant tuna and swordfish are being butchered, and live fish in trays of shallow water are waiting to die, yet fascinating because it presents an unrivalled experience for photography.
The market is life in Catania.
We have a responsibility to understand where our food comes from and how it gets to our plates, and the market exposes us to that in real, gritty, honest terms.
The market is one of the most fascinating places we’ve ever experienced for street and travel photography.
The fishmongers didn’t seem phased by the camera, and there were plenty of them about, plus there was a lot of action and interest to photograph.

We took a guided tour of Catania, which concluded at the Catania Fish Market.
Our tour guide, who was born and raised in Catania, said she no longer uses the fish market.
The reason is that the market has become a tourist attraction, which has forced the prices up.
We’re not local, so it’s impossible to argue, but the scenes looked very much like they were full of locals.
Having said that, Catania is a popular destination for Italian tourists, so perhaps they pop by to get some fresh fish for their dinner.
But who is cooking while on holiday when there are so many great places to eat? ๐
Whether it’s cheap, expensive, visited by locals or tourists, the Catania Fish Market is somewhere you need to experience.
